Late Breaking News
Well, maybe it is not news at all, because it is too late to be news. And it is late because of slow journalism. But, here’s the deal, the news.
The former residents of Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg who subscribe to this WebBlog (fondly known as the Tarpley’s Tavern ex-Pats) are all familiar with Martha Shoup, Julia’s daughter, who lives and works in Colorado. On one of her visits to The Villages to see Julia a few years back she was introduced to Dragon Boat racing. What you say? Dragon Boat racing? See a short Wikipedia’s summary of Dragon Boats at Dragon boat – Wikipedia (yeah, maybe it’s a long summary).
Those who know Martha also know that she does not just dabble in what she engages (remember her past time as a Japanese drummer?). And participating in Dragon Boat competition is not just a walk in the park. Check this out: https://youtu.be/58hPWd3bUX0. Not necessarily a sport for the weak at heart, or for that matter, the weak of heart.
The weekend of July 24th brought Martha to Sarasota, FL, for the International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships in 2022 in which she competed over a course of three days. Suffice it to say that Martha took home (or maybe to Julia) one bronze medal and three gold medals, the last of which can be seen below. Good going girl!
